A password-protected directory or area is a folder that can be accessed only when a username and a password are entered, so no unauthorized people could view its content. This option can be used for the primary folder of a particular website or exclusively for a certain subfolder depending on your preferences. For example, when you are developing a new Internet site and you do not want people to see it before it's completely ready, you need to limit the access to it as a whole, while if you want only some individuals to be able to access particular files, you can password-protect only a specific folder, while the other parts of the Internet site can be seen by anybody. In any case, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear in case the login details the visitor inputs are not correct. Even a direct link to a file will not work provided any folder above it is password-protected.
Password Protected Directories in Website Hosting
Setting up a password-protected area will take no more than several clicks and a few seconds if you host your sites in a website hosting account with our company. You will not have to do anything complicated - you'll have to choose a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it must be secured, and then to type in the login name and password that will be used to access that folder. If a number of individuals require their own login details, there will not be a problem to set up numerous different usernames with access to the same folder. All protected folders shall appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you will always know where this option is activated. If you would like to turn off the security feature for any folder, you can deactivate it from the same exact section of the Control Panel where you have enabled it.
Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you shall be able to secure any content that you've uploaded via our protection tool. Its interface is as simple and intuitive as that of the Hepsia CP it is part of, so you'll not need to enter any code at any time. You'll simply need to choose one of the domains/subdomains you have in the hosting account and to choose which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. After that you can type in the username and the password, which will be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you'll be ready. The protection will be turned on at once, so anyone that attempts to access the freshly protected folder shall have to enter the right login details. In case several people should be able to open precisely the same content, you could set up a separate username for each.
